Home Office: EU Citizens Have Less Than 10 Days to Apply to Remain in UK

Citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area, and Switzerland have been urged to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) as there are only ten days left for them to retain the same rights that they’ve had so far and continue to legally work, study and benefit from other services in the United Kingdom.

Even though the deadline for application for the EUSS is June 30, 2021, there will be some exemptions for people who have not applied up to this point, reports.

According to the Home Office, persons who have a reasonable excuse for their delay will have indefinite time to finish their application for settled status.

However, the UK’s Home Department clarified “that an application must be made for every eligible child within a family.”

“If an EEA, EU, or Swiss citizen and their family members have lived in the UK for many years or have a permanent residence document or EEA Biometric Residence Card (BRC), they still need to apply to the EUSS by June 30, 2021, to secure their existing rights in the island nation,” the Home Office has stressed.

Up to this point, about 5.6 million European Economic Area citizens, together with their dependents, have filed an application in order to obtain the settled status. Still, about 400,000 cases are unfinished.

In March 2018, the United Kingdom launched its EU Settlement pilot, while in August of the same year, the program was opened up for applicants from all EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens residing in the UK who wished to continue staying in the UK post-Brexit.

Up to December 31, 2020, nearly 4.9 million people applied for this scheme, while within three months, the number of applications rose to almost half a million.

All persons interested to remain in the UK are eligible to apply for the settled status, which can be obtained by persons who had been in the UK for five years or more before December 31, 2020. Such status has been granted to about 2.75 million people until May 31.

EU citizens in the UK who have been in the UK for less than five years until December 31, 2020, should apply for the pre-settled status.

Authorities in the UK have continuously called on the citizens to apply for the EUUS to remain in the UK legally.
